Campmate Info 2: On Playa

Everything you need to know about camping at PBR.

PBR is generously equipped with some of the finest amenities on the Playa, including:

  • Several art bikes
  • 12,000 square feet of shade with mesh floor (to catch MOOP).
  • Commercial kitchen with 10 burners, 3 ovens, 3-basin dish sink, 2-basin prep sink, hand wash sink, 3-door fridge, 2-door freezer.
  • All equipment to cook, including pots, pans, utensils, microwave, and toaster; 3-basin sink for washing dishes, with washing supplies. 
  • Catered Dinners (Wednesday thru Saturday)
  • Two refreshing showers available for use by camp mates
  • 4000 gallons of fresh water
  • 4000 gallon gray water tank
  • Professional audio (rivals a night club)
  • Arguably the best music on the Playa
  • Electricity (25 Kw Diesel Generator running 3-phase)
  • Two onsite portable toilets, for campmates only.  (DO NOT use the Medical Tent's toilets!)
  • A camp full of awesome camp mates!

Introduce Yourself

We're all in this together, so we're going to survive this together :)

When you arrive at camp:  Helene is our lovely greeter and is there to help you figure out where to set your tent, and give you your name badge. 

Each camp member will be given a PBR name badge. This will help your camp mates and the public know your name and that you are a part of our camp. When you're in PBR, make sure to wear your name badge.  (If you wear it out of camp, random people may ask you to fix their bike, offer you a drink, or tell you they love you.)

Once you are settled in, please help others who have just arrived.

Setting up your tent

There will be four zones for campmates this year based on when you plan to depart Black Rock City (BRC). Before pitching up your tent, make sure you check with Helene.  If you put your tent in the wrong spot, you'll probably have to move it.

Here are the four zones within the tent area:

  1. Leaving Monday or after (YELLOW)
  2. Sunday (RED)
  3. Saturday (BLUE)
  4. Friday or before (GREEN)
  5. Late arrivals (PURPLE)

Here's a map to better visualize the zones. Ribbons will be tied to the poles of the shade structures to help you see where these designated areas are. If you don't see them, ask someone.

When setting up your tent, please be sure to get the sides of your tent as close as you can to the next tent. Walkways should be behind or front of your tent door. Please ensure there is 2 ft of walkway in front of your tent.

Food at PBR

Catered dinner starts on Wednesday and runs to Saturday night.  We have a pre-dinner meeting at 7:00 PM, and dinner starts at 7:30 PM.  

If you stayed in camp a full day, this is what it would look like:

  • 10 am:  Earliest shifts start
  • 11am - 6 pm:  Bike Repair and Bike Distribution open.
  • 6 pm - 7 pm: Clean up of mech and distribution area.
  • 7 pm - 7:30 pm:  Pre-Dinner meeting.
  • 7:30 pm:  Dinner.  Make your evening plans.
  • 9:00 pm: Head out for the night.

Bring food high in minerals and salt. Your body does risk the opportunity to become chronically dehydrated. Help replenish your minerals and electrolytes by bringing along bananas, coconut water, cabbage, jicama, peanuts, and seaweed.

Work Shift Information

If you're new to our camp you're probably wondering what you need to do once you've signed up for a work shift. At the start of your workshift, meet your shift manager in the region where your work is designated:

  1. Mechanic or bike repair duties - meet at the bike repair area near the bar 10 minutes prior to shift start.
  2. Bike Distribution - scanning or loading bikes, meet in the bike distribution area 10 minutes prior to when your shift starts.
  3. Everything Else - MOOP cleanup, gas & propane, kitchen clean, etc. Meet in the lounge area 10 minutes prior to shift start.
